Nutrition

Your diet plays an important role in your personal well-being. What you eat will directly affect the processes in your body. To understand the importance of nutrition, it is helpful to know the effect of the individual nutrients.

A general definition of nutrition is the intake of organic and inorganic substances that serve as a source of energy for the body. The ingredients of food ensure, among other things, that muscles and organs can function correctly, and they make breathing, digestion, cell formation and cell breakdown possible.

Your diet is therefore the basis for numerous vital processes. Ideally, you provide your body with all the essential nutrients to achieve the optimal level of health and well-being for each individual. Poor nutrition over a long period of time can lead to obesity, underweight, deficiency symptoms and various diseases.

Balance your diet

In order to understand the principles of our diet, we need to know which nutrients fulfil which function. Depending on what foods you eat and to what extent, your nutrient needs will either be met or you will be deficient.

Carbohydrates

are the most important source of energy for the body. In the form of indigestible fibre, they also stimulate digestive processes in the intestines

Protein

consists of so-called amino acids. The body needs protein to build muscle and tissue, among other things. If there is more protein than needed, the surplus is converted into fat and sugar.

Fat

has the highest energy density compared to protein and carbohydrates and is also necessary for the absorption of certain vitamins. The essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6 in particular are an important part of our diet.

Vitamins

do not provide energy, but they are necessary for numerous vital processes in the body. Since these organic compounds cannot be produced by the organism itself, they are considered essential and must be obtained through the diet.

Minerals

are inorganic components of food that are also essential for humans. A distinction is made between bulk and trace elements: Bulk elements such as potassium, calcium, magnesium and sulphur support the heart, brain and muscles. Trace elements, which are needed to a lesser extent, are involved in numerous metabolic processes.

Water

is the basis of life of every organism known to us. Only after a short time without fluids, the first signs of deficiency appear – far earlier compared to the other nutrient groups.

Articles on a healthy diet for the gut have many starting points and cover different ways of nutrition, such as the vegan or vegetarian, but also special diets, such as low FODMAP diet. Discover the possibilities of a gut-healthy diet in our articles.

Forms of nutrition

There are many different diets. Most dietary programmes differ mainly in the foods that are classified as good or bad within each dietary pattern. As a rule, the decision for a certain dietary form is based on health, ethical or aesthetic reasons. A vegetarian diet, for example, abstains from animal meat. Veganism refers to a diet that excludes all products of animal origin.

Certain diets, aim for a lower calorie intake for a limited period of time or avoid certain foods. A so-called “detox” is a detoxification or purification cure.

Understanding nutrition: More than just food intake

A balanced and conscious diet is still often underestimated in its importance or is simply neglected in an everyday life full of stress. Nevertheless: Nutrition influences digestion, brain, muscle function, state of mind, ageing and many other processes and therefore deserves attention. Although the primary aim of nutrition is to provide the body with all vital substances for humans, food goes far beyond that.

The process of eating is an experience with all the senses that provides information to the brain and arouses emotions. What you eat and what you like is shaped by experiences, environment and education as well as learned behaviour from childhood. This is the reason why many people find it so difficult to change their diet.

A balanced intestinal flora alleviates intestinal complaints

To restore the intestinal flora, a precise analysis of the causes of the imbalance is necessary. With INTEST.pro, BIOMES brings the first complete intestinal flora analysis to the market, which contains individual recommendations for increasing health, well-being and quality of life.

INTEST.pro is a self-test used to collect a stool sample in a private environment, which determines the microbial composition, i.e. the number and ratio of all intestinal bacteria.

The balance of the intestinal flora can be supported by taking probiotics or probiotic foods. You can find more information about this on our info page on probiotics.
